“Are you lost?”

I asked him.

The silent man smiled,

looking a little confused,

yet strangely content,

standing close to the cliff

of the hill.

He said,

“I might get lost

if I do not choose

my steps carefully.

I might get lost

in a place

where you could only find

my remains.

If I choose to walk backwards

while watching you

worry about me,

I might get lost.

If I tell you

I have a rare diamond

in my pocket,

and you become greedy,

I might get lost

in this serene place.

If you close your eyes,

I might not be here

when you open them.

In a flick of a second,

milliseconds,

I might disappear

into thin air,

and you will stand there

wondering

whether it was magic

or some supernatural event

happening

right in front of your eyes.

Hey, traveller,

while I am standing here,

I am already lost

to the people

who are looking for me.

I am already lost

to the debtors

waiting for me.

I am already lost

to my beloved,

who chose someone

over me.

I am already lost

to my friends

who think

they can take

everything from me.

I am already lost

to my employer,

and now

they are looking

for another machine.

I am already lost,

my friend.

This place

is my abode.

There is a risk,

but there is also

the pleasure

of seeing life

from here.”
