School ground
road after crossing the bridge
past the door of the class
where I could peep at you
act like I was just walking normally
not beside you
but watching you
parallel to me
you wouldn’t feel stalked
still you might have wondered
why I was beside you
when I could have walked at a faster pace
once you caught me
walking beside you
watching you like a hopeless romantic
you fumed saying
either I should go first
or you would go first
but I couldn’t walk beside you
that made me smile
I chose to stay behind you
at least I could see your long hair
and hold on to the hope
that even mistakenly
you would turn your head around
but you were adamant
you never did
unless it was one of your classmates
I couldn’t of course
walk in front of you
in reverse
facing you
that would make me look awkward
in front of everyone
and you would kill me
with your frown
she must be happy now
it has been fifteen years
since I stopped following her
not even on social media
let alone knowing
how she looks now
she might smile
when she sees my picture
but I am not on social media either
we are both lost
in our own worlds
memories cut deep
sometimes they make me weep
and I try to console my heart
it was just an attraction
that somehow
grew into a friendship
